Media Literacy
Media Literacy was a course offered for Wapello students in 7th and 8th grade for six week intervals. Students were taught the basics of how to effectively utilize the Library Media Center and its resources. Library Media Center use lessons include Dewey Decimal Order, alphabetical order, OPAC (Online Patron Accessible Catalog - library catalog) use, and how to use specialized library resources. Students spent the majority of their time in Media Literacy practicing Big 6 research skills that they built upon as they continued their high school careers. Students in 7th grade focused their research exploration to selecting a researchable topic, brainstorming their topic, and locating and evaluating information for their purpose in a variety of formats and mediums. Students in 8th grade reviewed the content taught in the previous year and expanded their learning on taking effective notes without plagiarizing, constructing new original content (writing an essay) with parenthetical documentation, and evaluating their work for quality and purpose.
